Ben Chopra, is the latest addition to Synectic’s team of talented design and development engineers. Join us, as we sit down with Ben to find out a little about our newest Senior Design Engineer and what brought him to Synectic.
Ben, thank you so much for speaking with me and allowing everyone to get to know you better. First, let’s talk a little bit about your background and how you got into engineering.
BC: When I was 10 years old, I wanted to understand how car engines worked. I checked out a book on automobiles from the library and spent hours looking at pictures of the Otto 4 cycle engine until it made sense. I’ve always had a knack for wanting to understand how mechanical things work, and I used that passion to pursue mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech.
After college, how did you use your mechanical engineering degree?
BC: After college, I worked in Cleveland, OH for a large industrial products company. I moved back to Atlanta, GA in 2006 and worked for a company making keypads for the automotive, medical, and consumer electronics industry. It was during that experience that I grew a fondness for the rigors of medical device product development and manufacturing. I later joined a contract manufacture that makes medical devices for the diabetes industry where I honed my engineering and documenting skills in an ISO 13485 and FDA regulated environment. Most recently, I moved to Connecticut to work for a startup making a cost-effective Ultrasound device.
It sounds like you have a very varied background and could work almost anywhere. What made you decide to come and work at Synectic?
BC: There are two main reasons: the people and the projects. The cumulative experience of everyone working here is pretty phenomenal. At Synectic, you can tell that there is a real passion to tackle and solve engineering problems, no matter how large or small. I’m really lucky to be working around such a talented group. The second reason is the projects. You get to work on really neat consumer and medical device projects, trying to solve a wide variety of different challenges that you couldn’t otherwise do working directly for a large company.
Ben, we are so glad to have you here. How can your varied background and experience as an engineer help our customers?
BC: I’m fortunate to have had a broad experience in product development and design. I have worked on projects that started with nothing but sketches on a whiteboard and have also worked on gigantic projects helping support manufacturing systems that make billions of parts. Even though every project is new and unique, having that experience can help draw inspiration for new ideas. I also enjoy working with different customers. It’s great fun to talk with people about what they’re passionate about and being able to collaborate towards a common goal of a successful project.
When you are not hard at work, what do you like to do in your spare time? Any Hobbies?
BC: I’m an avid runner and cyclist. I have been doing triathlons for the last 8 years, and I enjoy the training and the friendly competition during races. I also live right next to bike trails, so whenever I can, I enjoy taking the mountain bike out. When I’m not outside being active, I also enjoy cooking.
