Engineering Minute – Smart Bandage Monitors Chronic Wounds

An Engineering team at Tufts University has created a prototype smart bandage that monitors chronic wounds and delivers tailored drug treatments as necessary. The bandage tracts the pH of non-healing infected wounds, which have a pH over 6.5 whereas normal healing wounds fall in the 5.5 to 6.5 range. A microprocessor in the bandage reads the data and releases drugs on demand via a hydrogel attached to transparent medical tape.
