Engineering Minute – hypersensitive hand-held robotic ear drill

Imagine a drill so precise it can puncture an eggshell but never pierce its delicate membrane. This hypersensitive hand-held robotic ear drill, developed by Brunel University in London, does just that. The drill, used in cochlear implant surgery, is specifically designed to stop automatically before reaching the endosteal membrane of the inner ear.
